CABLE CAR THEORY/ I, ROBOT -SPLIT 7" Immigrant Sun
"Touch The Sky" is the better of the Cable Car Theory songs on this seven inch. "Without Armor" is good but too disjointed. I, Robot on the other hand is tight fast hardcore with a little emo thrown in. I liked "Call Me Killer" it has great emo guitar parts mixed with fast hardcore. Overall this is a good buy. M. Jagger |

THIRD HARMONIC DISTORTION - EX ANIMO -Morphius DFM024
This is more of the Washington D.C. sound, only this time it’s coming from Baltimore, Md. This was produced by Drew Mazurek, who did Texas Is The Reason and Jawbox, so it gives you an idea of where they are coming from. This is their third album, and they keep getting better with each new release. Their writing is getting stronger too. I would love to see them live. B. Bradshaw |

ENSIGN - THREE YEARS TWO MONTHS ELEVEN DAYS - Indecision IND25
This is a compilation of their early seven inches, so if you like them you will like this. They added 5 newer songs from 1998 that were recorded live in Corona, Ca. They sound just as good live as they do on their early sevens. But there is not much new here; it’s just on a CD format so you don’t have to keep turning the records over. M.Anders |

SHAI HULUD/ BOY SETS FIRE - CRUSH EM’ ALL -Undecided
Metallica songs galore here. The Shai Hulud song "Damage Inc." is a nice loud and fast hardcore song, but the singer screams too much for my taste. It was recorded terrible, lots of noise. The Boy Sets Fire song "Fade To Black" is the better song on this record, even though it’s recording is weak. They have some nice guitar duets on this. I really liked the singing even though the song is a little too slow for me. B. Jones |

PRIMAL SCREAM - XTRMNTR -Creation/Astralworks CRECD239
Primal Scream has been through the gamut of styles, and this CD is no different. This time they are into synth-pop. It’s a little harder than Covenant or Apoptygma Berzerk, but it has well written songs that are sure to be dancefloor classics. I thought Creation records went out of business! The most memorable cut is "Swaztika Eyes". D. Washburn |

BANGS - SWEET REVENGE -Kill Rock Stars-Krs336
This is the Bangs second record and I think they are getting much tighter. It’s tight rock n roll with catchy hooks and two female singers. They do a great cover of "Southern Girls" by Cheap Trick. The writing in the band has gotten better too, the songs seem to stick in your head more than the first album. B. Bradshaw |

WAIFLE - AND THE BLOOD WILL COME DOWN LIKE A CURTAIN - Magic Bullet- MB7
This CD is recorded really good, but none of the songs are very memorable. I like the singer even though he’s a screamer. They would make a good hardcore band if the songwriting was better. This I think is their first CD, so I think it was a good first try. I would like to hear what else they do next. B. Jones |

PITCHSHIFTER - DEVIANT - MCA 088112254-2
Don’t get your hopes up. The first track, "Condescension," is riveting with its inventive chord progressions and melody. Unfortunately, nothing else on the disc comes close. They’ve obviously listened to Killing Joke, but fail to truly master the technique of applying punishing beats to chaotic guitar. Too bad. J. Maisey |

CAPITOL CITY DUSTERS/ AINA -A SPLIT 7" - Superbad/Dischord- 8/dis125.5
"Reason," the song by the Capitol City Dusters, is a good song but the drums sound like they were recorded in a living room. Alec, the vocalist/guitarist, is very good, some nice vocals. "Lutton Can Wait" by Aina (from Spain) is the far better of the two songs on this record. The vocals are buried too much for my liking. Both bands are good though. M. Jagger |

REVEREND HORTON HEAT - SPEND A NIGHT IN THE BOX - Time bomb- 70930-43534-2
This CD swings (with some rockabilly thrown in for good measure) from "Spend A Night In The Box" to the last song, "The Party In Your Head". If you liked "Jump Jive and Wail" by Brian Setzer, then you will like this whole CD. And they even write their own songs, unlike some other swing artists. D. Bradshaw |

THE GLORIA RECORD - A LULL IN TRAFFIC - Crank 80121-2
This is nice dreampop. The guitars remind me of Oasis at times. They use a lot of guitar loops with flowing melodies overlaid on top. This CD is a five song ep. The singer sounds a little too much like what you hear on the radio all the time, but he seems to fit the music wonderfully. Overall this is a good CD, a little to slow for me, but you might like it. B. Jones |

DIN_FIV - ESCAPE TO REALITY -Metropolis MET146
An electronic industrial band from the U.S. with a style that seems to be from Germany. Skinny Puppy definitely comes to mind, with distorted voices, samples and even slower keyboard rhythms. Upbeat and danceable, if you’re into dancing to bands like Apoptygma and ::Wumpscut::. This is the 2nd release by this one man band, Da5id Din. I’ve not heard of this band until now but I'm definitely hooked and going to check them out further. ~§hawn |

BEEFCAKE - REJECTED -Fearless F042-2
Beefcake seems to be a lot of fun. They have very funny lyrics with music that resembles The Queers. They take their lyrics a little further than most bands. "End of the World", "Proctologist", Bob Saget (I Hate You)", and "My Dominatrix" are a few of the subjects covered here. Aside from that the music has good melodies and is catchy. They even do a good cover of Cheap Trick’s "Surrender". B. Bradshaw |

BLACK CAT MUSIC - ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE -Lookout LK247
A generous dose of rock and roll in one single. "One Foot in the Grave" has good hard rocking guitars that is anything but one foot in the grave. This song has a good groove to it. "Institution Green" is not half as good as the A-side of this record. It sounds like to many other bands. Overall the band is tight. They would be fun to see live. D. Washburn |

LIFETIME - SEVEN INCHES -Black Cat/Temperance 01
The band decided to do this release on their own label with the help of Temperance. I have always liked Lifetime but I have never liked the singer’s voice, it just grates on you. It’s a shame because the music is well written hardcore. The band performs very well but the singer sounds like he is struggling to keep up. This CD includes their first seven inch which I like very much. M. Jagger |

MORAL CRUX - THE SIDE EFFECTS OF THINKING - Panic Button/Lookout PB283CD/LK248CD
Even though this album was recorded in 1989, it takes me back to 1980. Early Stiff Little Fingers and Clash come to mind. "Don’t Forget" could have been a Clash song. "Another Funeral" reminds me of early Misfits, it even sounds like Danzig singing. Songs about rights and freedom, anti-establishment, global issues and funerals, what more could you want. I still think this style of punk is the best. D. Washburn |

THE ANNIVERSARY -DESIGNING A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN - Vagrant VR342/HV003
Wonderful droning pop/emo songs. I especially like the male/female vocals together. Most songs use what sounds like old analog mini moogs. I tend to like that sound. Fans of Magnetic Fields, Swirlies and My Bloody Valentine will like this. "All Things Ordinary" and "Without Panosos" are my favorites. The lyrics are very thoughful, with flowing melodies. I’m looking forward to a second album. M. Jagger |

THE AMAZING CROWNS - ROYAL - Time Bomb 70930-43540-2
If you like Reverend Horton Heat you will like this. They blend rockabilly with punk. Some songs could be the Clash with a rockabilly guitarist, which makes for an interesting sound. "Royal," kicks off the album with a slap at whoever made them change their name. They use to be the Amazing Royal Crowns, the shorter name is better anyway. This album swings. B. Jones |

THE UNBAND - RETARDER - Tvt TVT2020-2
The more I listen to this, I don’t know who is the more retarded, me for listening to this, or the band for churning out this crap. This is not even good radio stuff. The Unband plays bad rock and roll, they seem to be trying to blend Molly Hatchet with Britpop. It doesn’t work too well, at least not in this case. I think song number eleven sums it up, "(Sure Do Feel Like A) Piece Of Shit." B. Bradshaw |

COMIN’ CORRECT/WHERE FEAR AND WEAPONS MEET - Temperance TEMP21
Both bands are heavy hardcore, I tend to like Where Fear And Weapons Meet better than Comin’ Correct. Comin’ Correct does a good live cover of "Young Til I Die" by 7 Seconds. The singer mumbles too much for me, but the band kicks butt. Where Fear and Weapons Meet do "Straight on View" by Unity. Overall a short CD. M. Anders |
